Glider processing toolbox released!

I just released on a Git repository the last version of my glider processing toolbox. The aims of this toolbox is to read glider data from the seaglider basestation and EGO netcdf format (used by the Global Data Assembly Center Coriolis), perform automatic and manual quality controls, and generated various plots to quickly diagnose the quality of the data.

Ocean Sciences Meeting

Bowmore deployed for the OSNAP5 mission

OSNAP 8 & 9 cruises

I was on two of the OSNAP cruises this summer. The purpose of these cruises is to service the (Dutch) Irminger Current moorings, the (British) DWBC moorings, the (US) Iceland Basin and the (Scottish) Rockall Channel moorings; to deploy RAFOS floats over the slopes east of Greenland (western Irminger Basin) and east of the MAR ridge crest (eastern Iceland Basin); to recover the glider Bowmore and to deploy new gliders

Oceans in Weather and Climate training course

I was at the NERC Advanced Training Course: Oceans in Weather and Climate , at the Met Office. The week was really interesting with a lot of different topics investigated from the diurnal cycle of the mixed layer to the multi-decadal variability of the ocean circulation, with very good Python practicals.

I started a 4-year position at SAMS on the international Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP), with Prof. Stuart Cunningham and Prof. Mark Inall. As a Post Doctoral Project Scientist, I will support the physical oceanographic observations being made as part of UK-OSNAP, and undertake scientific research with those observations.

My Research

My Work as a Post Doctoral Project Scientist on the Overturning in the Supolar North Atlantic

In November, I started a 4-year postdoctoral position at the Scottish Association for Marine Science on the international Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP), with Prof. Stuart Cunningham and Prof. Mark Inall. As a Post Doctoral Project Scientist, I support the physical oceanographic observations being made as part of UK-OSNAP, and undertake scientific research with those observations in collaboration with national and international partners. OSNAP expand the Atlantic meridional overturning system (2014-2019) by deploying a purposeful array of moorings, gliders and floats from Newfoundland to Scotland via Greenland. UK-OSNAP generate new knowledge of the North Atlantic Subpolar Gyre and its impacts on climate, and will enhance our understanding of processes critical to the improvement of physics in climate models, through sustained observation of ocean circulation and fluxes together with analysis and modelling.


For my work, I developped a matlab toolbox to read glider data from the seaglider basestation and EGO netcdf format (used by the Global Data Assembly Center Coriolis), perform automatic and manual quality controls, and generated various plots to quickly diagnose the quality of the data.
The strengths of this toolbox are the quick and automatic generation of plots and matlab structure in a coherent and organised directory structure. The different setup functions that allow the user to setup parameters for glider missions, graphic and plots and quality-control steps. All of these user parameters can be setup for different ''observatories'' (== regions), so graphics and QCs parameters stayed coherent between different glider missions.

Mixed layer and Deep Convection in the Mediterranean Sea

My PhD thesis was about the transfer processes from the surface to the deep ocean in the Mediterranean Sea. The main aims of this PhD thesis were to improve our understanding of dense water formation processes. The surface layer of the ocean is the site of active ocean-atmosphere exchanges, due to wind mixing and heat and fresh water fluxes across the air–sea interface. This homogeneous surface layer, also called the oceanic mixed layer, presents a typical seasonal cycle in temperate regions (deep in winter, close to the surface in summer). In the Gulf of Lions, the oceanic mixed layer can reach the bottom (2300m depth) in winter, this phenomenon is known as deep convection. Open-ocean deep convection and dense shelf water cascading (cascades into the continental shelf canyons of dense water formed by convection on the shelf in winter) are key processes that connect the surface ocean to the deep ocean. They may transfer heat, salt, but also biogeochemical components to the deep ocean, like oxygen and inorganic and organic matter. These processes contribute therefore to the ventilation and the “feeding” of the deep pelagic and benthic ecosystems.

This work was essentially based on ocean observations. I had the opportunity to participate in four oceanographic cruises, where I took part in the deployment and the data acquisition of several oceanographic instruments, whose are maintained by the MOOSE observing system (Mediterranean Ocean Observing System for the Environment). The processing and the analysis of these data were made mainly together with data from other measurement plateforms, like the French LION Buoy, Argo profiling floats, Ocean Color satellite data or atmospheric reanalyses.

This PhD thesis was done in the framework of two french research projects: HyMeX (Hydrological cycle in the Mediterranean Experiment, http://www.hymex.org) and MERMeX (Marine Ecosystems Response in the Mediterranean Experiment), part of MISTRALS program (Mediterranean Integrated STudies at Regional And Local Scales). MISTRALS is a research program dedicated to the study of the Mediterranean basin and its surroundings, with the aim to "better understand the impact of global factors on this region and to anticipate changes over a century of living conditions“.
